サーンチー第１塔北塔門．
４門のうちで、彫刻の保存状態が最もよっく、最も優れていると評されている。
方柱の上で梁を支える彫刻は塔門によって異なり、ここ北塔門は象である。柱を支えている４頭の象が、長い鼻を巻いている造型も巧みである。
象・獅子・馬などの彫刻、隙間なく彫られた繊細な浮彫は、インドの美術の精華と称される。
車輪や蓮の花や菩提樹など仏陀に関するシンボルは、偶像崇拝が禁じられた時代の所産である。
シンボルを礼拝した日本の例として、薬師寺の仏足石が先ず思い浮かぶ。
